Meriadoc Brandybuck
A Knight of Rohan whose Barrow-blade broke the shadow of the Dark Lord.
Meriadoc Brandybuck, known affectionately as Merry, stands as a Hobbit of Buckland and one of the nine members of the Fellowship of the Ring. Initially dismissed by some as merely a spirited companion to his cousin Pippin, he evolves into a leader of remarkable strategic acumen throughout the War of the Ring.
His journey spans from the sunlit paths along the Brandywine River to the blood-soaked Pelennor Fields, where he plays a pivotal role in shattering the spell that made the Witch-king of Angmar invulnerable. Lore & Background
Born into the prestigious Brandybuck family, Merry grew up in Buckland, a region of the Shire defined by its independence and fortified defenses against the Old Forest. He was inseparable from Peregrin Took; together they navigated childhood with harmless pranks that disturbed the Shire's quietude just enough to be memorable. When the Shadow lengthened, it was Merry who first sensed the peril of the Ring, urging Frodo to flee before the Black Riders arrived.
After the Fellowship fractured at Amon Hen, Merry and Pippin were captured by Uruk-hai but escaped into Fangorn Forest, an event that inadvertently awakened the Ents and saved Rohan from Saruman. In Rohan, he earned a rare honor: being granted a horse and dubbed a Knight of Rohan for his valor.
Merry's defining act occurred on the Pelennor Fields during the Battle of Minas Tirith. Wielding a blade forged in Arnor that burned with cold fire, he struck the Witch-king of Angmar while Éowyn delivered the killing blow. This fulfilled an ancient prophecy that no man could kill him, as Merry was a Hobbit and Éowyn a woman.
In Their Own Story
The wind howled across the Pelennor Fields, thick with the stench of death. The great Witch-king loomed over the fallen shield-maiden, his black blade raised for a final strike. But a small figure, clad in silver armor that seemed too large for him, sprang from behind the horse's flank.
"Strike!" Merry cried, his voice trembling yet resolute. He thrust the ancient Barrow-blade into the shadowy knee of the Dark Lord. The blade glowed with a pale light as it bit deep, shattering the spell that held the terror together. As the Witch-king shrieked in confusion and pain, Éowyn seized the moment, driving her sword home. The great enemy fell, and the shadow lifted from the battlefield, leaving only the small Hobbit standing amidst the giants of war.
Reader's Guide
Meriadoc Brandybuck begins as a playful and curious youth, often overshadowed by his cousin Pippin's recklessness, yet he possesses a quiet wisdom and strong sense of duty. As one of the youngest members of the Fellowship, he struggles with feelings of inadequacy but quickly matures through the trials of war.
His defining arc is one of transformation from a mischievous hobbit into a respected commander, though this growth comes at a cost. The Morgul-wound inflicted by the Witch-king left him physically weakened and spiritually scarred, creating a lingering melancholy that eventually compelled him to leave Middle-earth for the Undying Lands.
