The Lord of the Rings Codex

Nine Rings of Men

They promised power, but delivered only an eternity of shadow and servitude.

Forged by the Elven-smiths under Sauron’s deceptive guidance during the Second Age, these rings were gifts of corruption disguised as treasures. They promised their mortal bearers power and longevity, but instead delivered a fate worse than death: an eternal existence as invisible wraiths bound irrevocably to the Dark Lord's will.

Lore & Background

Across generations, the kings who wore them slowly faded from the visible world. Their physical forms dissolved into invisibility, remaining perceptible only to those with sight beyond the veil. As their bodies vanished, so too did their minds; the One Ring eroded their humanity until nothing remained but a singular, obsessive hunger for its master. Thus were born the Nazgûl—the Black Riders—clad in shrouds of shadow, driven by an unquenchable need to reclaim the ring that enslaved them. When the One Ring was finally cast into Mount Doom, the Nine Rings did not burn; instead, their power was instantly severed, leaving them as mere scattered relics while their bearers were utterly destroyed.

In Their Own Story

The wind howled through the high passes, carrying the scent of rot before the shadow ever appeared. He saw them first as a distortion in the air, nine dark shapes gliding over the snow without leaving footprints. They wore long cloaks that seemed to absorb the light, and beneath their hoods, there was only darkness where faces should be. One raised a pale hand, and a sound like a dying breath filled his mind, whispering of fear and surrender. The man dropped his sword, for he knew that in the presence of these ancient kings, his own life was already forfeit to the master they served.

Reader's Guide

These artifacts operate as a cruel engine of domination for mortal ambition. Upon donning one, a man gains strength and sight into the unseen, but at the terrible price of his very substance. His body slowly fades until he exists solely in the wraith-world, terrifyingly visible to those with spiritual sight while remaining invisible to common eyes. Fully transformed, the bearer becomes a Nazgûl: an immortal slave whose will is subsumed by the One Ring. They move with unnatural speed, sense the Master's ring across vast distances, and instill paralyzing dread in their foes. Though fire burns them and water can sweep them from the physical plane, only the destruction of the One Ring could truly unmake them.
