Lore & Background

Bilbo discovered the Ring in Gollum's hidden cave before the company began their escape from Goblin-town. Unaware he held a weapon of ultimate domination, he used its power of invisibility to evade capture and aid his flight, rather than finding it during the group's panicked retreat. While the Ring granted him invisibility and prolonged life, its corrupting influence remained dormant for decades—unlike Gollum, who twisted over centuries in the dark. This event bridged the gap between the age of legend and the coming darkness, as Sauron's power slowly returned while the Ring remained hidden in the Shire.

In Their Own Story

The air was thick with the smell of damp stone and ancient decay. Bilbo stood alone in the pitch-black tunnel, his heart hammering against his ribs. He had lost his way, separated from Thorin and the others, when his hand brushed against something cold and smooth on the floor. It was a ring, simple and unadorned, yet it seemed to hum with a faint, invisible warmth. With no light to see by, he slipped it onto his finger out of habit. Suddenly, the darkness shifted; the shadows that had held him captive now recoiled. He looked down at his hands and saw only the stone floor beneath them. A strange power coursed through him, silent and seductive, whispering that he could move unseen among the goblins and escape forever.

Reader's Guide

Separated from Thorin’s company in the labyrinthine caves, Bilbo encountered the wretched creature known as Gollum. Their fates intertwined through a deadly riddle contest where life hung on wit alone. Though Bilbo won, he discovered the Ring in his pocket during the match. As Gollum moved to slay him upon realizing the theft, Bilbo’s mercy spared the creature—a choice that would echo through history. This act of pity allowed Bilbo to escape with the Ring, unknowingly securing the instrument needed to defeat Sauron.
