The Fall of Gandalf marks the cataclysmic climax in the Mines of Moria, where the Wizard Gandalf the Grey stands as a solitary bulwark against the ancient terror known as Durin's Bane. This pivotal sacrifice shatters the Fellowship, severing their guide from their side and plunging them into a desperate flight through the dark, while setting in motion the wizard's own death-and-rebirth cycle that would ultimately alter the fate of Middle-earth.

The conflict did not cease with the fall into the abyss. Gandalf and the Balrog engaged in a grueling duel that traversed the forgotten roots of the world, ascending from the deepest darkness to the snow-swept summit of Mount Celebdil (Zirakzigil). There, atop the highest peak of the Misty Mountains, their final clash ended with the death of both combatants. Yet this was not a true end, but a divine intervention by Eru Ilúvatar; Gandalf was sent back to Middle-earth, transfigured and empowered as Gandalf the White to complete his mission with renewed authority.

Gandalf's voice thundered through the cavern, the solitary grey figure anchoring himself against a tide of shadow and flame. The Balrog roared, a sound that seemed to shake the mountain's foundations, but the wizard held fast, his staff raised in defiance. With a final, earth-shattering strike, the Bridge of Khazad-dûm crumbled beneath the demon's weight. As the beast plummeted into the void, its clawed hand clamped onto Gandalf's ankle, dragging the grey-clad wizard into the terrifying dark below, leaving only silence and the fading echo of a broken world.
Reader's Guide
The event begins when the Fellowship is trapped in Moria by Orcs and Trolls. As they reach the Bridge of Khazad-dûm, the Balrog emerges from the shadows. Gandalf commands the others to cross while he holds the line. He breaks the bridge with his staff, causing the Balrog to fall, but the creature's whip ensnares him, dragging him into the abyss.
Following this initial clash, a prolonged duel occurs in the depths below and up through the mountainsides. They fight for days, climbing from the deepest roots of the earth to the highest peak of Zirakzigil. This ascent is unseen by the other members of the Fellowship, who believe Gandalf has perished.
The impact is profound: the loss of their leader leaves the Fellowship fractured and vulnerable. Aragorn must assume temporary leadership, leading them through Lothlórien rather than back to Rivendell or directly to Rohan as originally planned. However, this sacrifice proves essential, as Gandalf's return as the White Wizard later becomes the catalyst for uniting the free peoples of Middle-earth against Sauron.
