The Black Gate Opens chronicles the desperate gambit of the Free Peoples: a suicidal march against Sauron's fortress designed to steal victory through sacrifice. By marching openly before the Morannon, Gandalf and Aragorn force the Dark Lord to turn his gaze from Mount Doom, buying precious time for Frodo Baggins and Samwise Gamgee to reach the fires of Orodruin.

Iron gates groaned inward, spilling forth a tide of Orcs, Trolls, and Easterlings that blotted out the sun. Amidst this sea of black armor, the Mouth of Sauron emerged to mock the leaders. He offered tokens of Frodo’s Elven cloak and mithril coat as proof of the Ring-bearer's capture. Though despair gripped the host, Gandalf recognized the trap. Rejecting parley with a sharp command, he ordered the charge, knowing every moment spent in combat was time bought for the hobbits climbing Orodruin.
In Their Own Story
The wind howled through the barren wastes of the Morannon, carrying the scent of ash and iron. Aragorn stood tall beside Gandalf, his hand resting on the hilt of Andúril as the great gates groaned open like the maw of a sleeping beast. Before them stretched a sea of black armor and red eyes, an endless tide that seemed to blot out the sun. 'Open wide,' the Mouth of Sauron sneered, holding aloft a tattered green shirt. The air grew heavy with the weight of despair, but Gandalf's voice cut through the gloom, sharp as steel. 'We do not parley!' he cried, raising his staff. With a roar that shook the very stones beneath their feet, the banners of Rohan and Gondor surged forward, a final, glorious charge against the darkness.
Reader's Guide
The engagement begins with the assembly of the Western Host at the Morannon, where banners are raised to ensure Sauron sees them clearly. As they approach the gate, the Mouth of Sauron emerges to negotiate, presenting Frodo's gear as false evidence of his capture.
Gandalf identifies the deception and refuses parley, ordering an immediate charge into enemy lines despite overwhelming odds. Aragorn leads the assault alongside the Rangers of the North while forces of Gondor and Rohan surge forward.
Strategically, this sacrifice diverts Sauron’s Eye from Mount Doom. The distraction allows Frodo and Sam to slip past defenses unnoticed, reaching the fires where they can destroy the One Ring.
