Following Smaug's death and the Battle of Five Armies, Durin's Folk reclaimed the Lonely Mountain, restoring the Kingdom under the Mountain. Under King Thorin III Stonehelm, Erebor regained its status as a bastion of Dwarven wealth and craftsmanship in the North, standing firm against encroaching darkness during the War of the Ring.

Lore & Background
As Sauron's shadow lengthened over Middle-earth, the Dwarves of Erebor faced a siege from Dol Guldur. The Dark Lord sought to crush them to secure his northern flank and seize the mountain's resources. Isolated from southern allies, King Brand of Dale fell at the gates before Dáin Ironfoot stood guard over his body until he too was slain. Their grim resolve held the enemy long enough to prevent a full unification of forces.
In Their Own Story
The wind howled through the high passes of the Red Mountains, carrying the scent of ash and iron. Inside the great gates of Erebor, the guards stood motionless, their beards braided with gold but their eyes hard as flint. King Dáin adjusted his heavy helm, listening to the distant rumble of an approaching host that shook the very foundations of the mountain. Beside him, a young smith gripped a war-axe, his hands calloused from the forge rather than the sword, yet his stance betrayed no fear. 'Let them come,' Dáin rumbled, his voice echoing off the stone walls. 'The Mountain has withstood dragons and death; it will not bow to shadows.'

Erebor's resistance pinned Sauron's eastern armies in the North, preventing them from reinforcing Mordor and aiding Frodo and Sam's mission.
